As the winter weather creeps down upon us in the Middle Mississippi valley, we ready ourselves for the annual Eagle migration and the opportunity to witness our great national icon in ways that land based tours can not. We offer winter paddling trips and customized eagle watching tours by canoe. We outift all paddlers in protective winter paddling apparel and provide the expertise of years of safe winter travel by canoe. Contact us to schedule your own customized trip.

Twenty feet in diameter by three feet in depth. Icebergs slowly revolving and moving downstream on the Mississippi River just below the Confluence and Duck Island. Big Muddy Mike took this in 2007 on a winter paddling trip. Too bad, this photo doesn't have audio capabilities. The sound of the river in winter is amazing!
BMA is recognized by the St. Louis Audubon Center, the Confluence Partnership, and the Mississippi Water Trail Association as one of the key providers of access to the Great Rivers region. |

We are booking the following Full Moon Floats:
January 30 - Full Wolf Moon
Join Big Muddy Adventures as we set out on the Mississippi River in the late afternoon, into the magic hour of sunset. We'll make a dinner camp and then like the wolf, we will take a hike on a pristine island by the light of the full moon. The sights and sounds of an island forest at night are priceless. We can spend some time by the warm winter fire or set out on the river to paddle around the island. Fire, Water and Ice, and a great adventure. This trip is special. We challenge ourselves and all the while focus on safety and what great natural beauty we live amongst. For details about cost, what to wear (we provide neoprene wet suits, boots and gloves for protection agains the elements), what to bring and where we'll go...
Contact us to make your reservation for a Full Moon Float. We are limited to 16 participants. First come first serve! |

(Over the Chain of Rocks with Planet Xtreme crew)
Sometimes, river time, the way we love it, is not what others are looking for. There are some folks who are not interested in a peaceful and soulful experience. No, for some, it is excitement and adventure that they crave. For that, the Chain of Rocks is where we go. It is just the place to amp up the adrenaline flow and put our skills to the highest test. It is probably the most troublesome, dangerous place on the Mississippi River for paddlers, especially at a low water stage. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to provide the daring and exciting version of river time for a group of elite, world record holding Planet X athletes. Read more... |
BMA now operates a canoe rental and livery operation in the Great Rivers region. Check out the details.

We have been involved in producing and implementing Adventure Learning projects in schools since 2001. We are beginning the planning for this year's Big Muddy Adventure Learning Expedition. If you are interested in getting involved in a cool adventure learning project, contact us. We are currently considering a circumnavigation of St. Louis. Yes, it's possible except for about 8 miles of land portage. Or we are interested in a complete navigation of the St. Francis River from it's headwaters near Farmington, MO to it's confluence with the Mississippi River just eight miles above the Quapaw Canoe Company's Helena, AR Outpost. Teachers, students, life long learners and followers of Ruskey and Clark Expeditions, drop us a note and let us know which you think would be the best. Or offer your own suggestion. |
BMA has been featured in the local and national media. "Chicago's very own", WGN TV and their "Cruisin' Illinois" segment gave us some national exposure with a bit on their June 11 segment. You can ckeck it out at WGNTV.com. Locally, we hosted Terry Maddox and photographer Derik Holtmann of the Belleville News Democrat on one of our signature Full Moon Floats. Terry captured the essence of what we do in her article and Derik shot some video and a fine array of photos of our night circumnavigating Maple Island. You can check out their flattering piece at BND.com. |
